What is an LEP flashlight and why is it good?
In recent years, alongside LED flashlights, a new, modern technology has emerged: LEP flashlights, characterized by their enormous range and minimal light spill. We have gathered what you need to know about LEP flashlights, when to choose one, and when not, which ones we recommend, and which ones we don’t.
What is an LEP flashlight?
The major advantage of LEP flashlights over LED ones is their low power consumption, they don't heat up, and they draw less current, making them an excellent choice for those who prioritize range.
Disadvantage: the light doesn’t spread at all, concentrating on a small area. If you need light beyond the illuminated area, we recommend long-range LED flashlights instead of LEP.
How does an LEP flashlight work?

An LEP light source generally works by focusing a blue laser on a phosphor element mounted on a substrate. The laser is either reflected or passed through the phosphor, converting it to narrow or broad-spectrum light, depending on the phosphor material used.
With modifications to LEP modules, a wide range of colors can be achieved, including parts of the visible and invisible spectrum, such as infrared (IR). For example, a near-infrared LEP can serve as a strong spotlight for long-range night vision cameras and instruments. An LEP-based SWIR (short-wave infrared) light source can be suitable for long-distance communication or atmospheric studies.
A phosphor-modified NIR/SWIR LEP can be a compact, portable light source for optical absorbance, reflectance, and transmission measurements. It operates at low DC voltage and emits more infrared light than traditional IR LEDs or lasers. IR LEPs can be narrow-band, multi-band, or broadband, significantly extending the spectral range or wavelength options compared to traditional NIR and SWIR sources.
When are LEP flashlights used?

Which LEP flashlight has the farthest range?
Currently, the Maxtoch Xsword L2KSD is the LEP flashlight with the longest range, reaching 3200 meters, far surpassing all other LEP flashlights.
